Our diverse Global UX Team – situated in greater Detroit, Palo Alto, London, and Shanghai - is comprised of experience strategists, researchers, interaction designers, visual designers, industrial designers, motion and audio designers, content creators, prototypers, and project managers. Together our team works to understand our changing world, identify new opportunities, and take action to design and innovate for the future of mobility – Ford’s vehicles and surrounding experiences.

This position is located in Dearborn, MI.


We are looking for a UX Prototype Developer to join us in designing future interactions and experiences for our global customers. Primary position duties will include the planning, creation, development, and testing of various fidelity level prototypes that contribute to the research and validation of target brand experiences. The audience of these properties will range from external consumers to executive management. These physical/digital prototypes represent the core deliverables of the UX Team and will include interactive digital storyboards, desktop simulators, iterative software/hardware developmental platforms, mobile applications, static driving simulators, and dynamic vehicle demonstrators. The stimulus type and level of prototype fidelity will be dependent on the target research questions. Collaboration and continuous communication among cross-functional teams will be instrumental to the success of these deliverables.
  • Build a platform of software and hardware tools to facilitate the rapid prototyping of defined user experiences
  • Maintain high standards of software quality within the team by following good practices and habits
  • Learn and build upon an internal software development framework
  • Collaborate with other developers to plan, design, develop, test, and maintain embedded applications
  • Collaborate with internal cross-functional teams and suppliers to design, develop, document, and maintain software / hardware deliverables for various projects
  • Manage individual workload and deliver to established project milestones

Job Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • 2+ years in an electrical hardware development role which can include graduate work projects
  • 2+ years of experience working on projects that involve the implementation of various sensor types (to measure force, position, acceleration, and/or light) and data acquisition hardware (e.g., National Instruments, PEAK System)
  • 1+ years of experience working on single-board microcontroller / computers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBoard, chipKIT… etc.) for the rapid development of digital devices and designing / developing custom PCBs
  • 1+ years of experience working on projects that involve the implementation of communication technologies such as TCP/IP, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and CAN

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering
  • Familiarity with vehicle electrical architecture and sub-system components
  • Experience with the integration of external computers into a vehicle to prototype conceptual vehicle systems (e.g., In-CarPC, dSpace MicroAutoBox/ControlDesk)
  • Experience with CAN based vehicle engineering tools (e.g., PEAK System, Vector)
  • Experience developing software in C++, C#, and/or JavaScript
  • Experience developing on Windows and Android
  • Able to learn and develop with new SDKs/IDEs to support proprietary hardware platforms (e.g., Leap Motion, Microsoft Kinect, Arduino, Google Cardboard… etc.)
  • Experience in developing data processing software with Matlab/Simulink
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with internal cross-functional team members and external business partners
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict management skills
