Whether it’s knobs, screens, voice commands, fonts, or colors, Casey’s work is trying to integrate technology with Ford vehicles in the most elegant way possible.

“At the end of the day, you just want to make a really good product.”

From the dashboard to the exterior, Casey Feldman sees automotive technology as a canvas that has yet to be completed. With a degree in Digital Arts and Science Software engineering, he’s constantly looking for ways to improve the relationship between drivers and their vehicles. Whether it’s knobs, screens, voice commands, fonts, or colors, Casey’s work is trying to integrate technology with Ford vehicles in the most elegant way possible.

While working on SYNC 3, Casey looked to other technologies for inspiration. He wanted to give the system the speed and performance of a tablet while maintaining an interaction model that would make the system safe for drivers. He then took safety a step further with an experiment to integrate the system with Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms.

Casey looks to Ford’s rich design heritage to inspire his designs as well. He points to Mark Newson’s radical Ford 021C concept car from 1999 as one influence on his work. “It is just a beautiful, very futuristic looking car,” says Casey. “The 021C is actually named after the Pantone color, an orange. And so sometimes I will use that as a reference for some of the oranges that I’ll use in my designs, just as a little homage.”

Casey is excited about the breadth of work in the Palo Alto Research and Innovation Center. He’s able to design a potential product one day, engineer it the next, and then continue iterating based on the results. “At the end of the day, you just want to make a really good product,” he says. By putting his skills and creativity to use, he’s helping Ford create products that will shape the future of mobility and in-car connectivity.
